Tucker Heads to Nationals

Tucker's Performance Part of Successful Season for Lions Swim Programs

MARS HILL, N.C.—Nearing the end of another successful season for the Lions swim programs, men’s swim team member Hudson Tucker will be competing in the National Championship meet next week.

Tucker will travel to Mansfield, Tex. to compete in three events at the National Championships: the 100 Fly, 100 Back and 100 Free. Tucker’s outstanding performance in last week’s Last Chance Meet in Athens, Ga. helped secure his chance to compete in the championship events. Tucker’s 48.91 time in the 100 Back at the Last Chance Meet set a school record and placed him fourth in the nation. The National Championships begin Wednesday, March 14.

The team had four swimmers make National cuts this year; Tucker in his three events, Nicole Day in the 200 Back and 200 Free, Audley Elder in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, and Tyler Treadway in the 200 Fly. However Tucker was the only one to place high enough to get a bid to Nationals.

The women’s team finished the season with a dual meet record of 9-3 and the men 7-4.The team set five conference records this year, and broke numerous team records.

Coach Teddy Guyer stated, “The year is ending on a good note, with all the national cuts and Hudson making it back to the National Championship with some exceptional times. This was a good surprise since Hudson was hurt most of the season and we were not even sure he would even be able to swim at conference. Hudson is going into next week’s championship still not at 100 percent. We have not been able to train much due to illness and continued injury problems but you know Hudson will give all he has and we will see what happens”
