Softball Signees take home Awards

Softball signees honored for excellence on field and in classroom

MARS HILL, N.C.—Four members of the Mars Hill softball 2012 recruiting class have received awards for academic and athletic excellence. Jamie Booze and Taylor Burkhalter were honored as players of the year in their respective conferences, while Jamie Hockaday and Lauren Saller were recognized for excellence in the classroom.

Booze was named the Bayside Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Additionally, Booze was named first team all-conference. Her excellence in the circle helped propel Mardela High School to their first conference championship in 30 years and the Maryland State Title game.

Burkhalter was recognized as the Catawba Valley 2A Conference Player of the Year. Burkhalter’s 16-game hitting streak for East Burke High School (N.C.) landed her in the state record books.

Hockaday and Saller each received the NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement Award for their excellence in the classroom. The award is based on cumulative GPA over the course of two years. Hockaday checked in with a 3.91 GPA, and Saller worked her way to a 3.87 GPA.

All four of these student-athletes are set to join the Mars Hill softball program this fall and will be eligible to play in the 2013 season.
