Incoming Freshman named State Player of the Year

MARS HILL, N.C.-- Incoming freshman softball recruit Taylor Burkhalter was named the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A State Player of the Year.

The State Player of the Year award capped a successful senior season for the infielder from East Burke High School in Icard, N.C. Burkhalter entered the NCHSAA Record Book by recording a hit in 16 consecutive at-bats, and her .719 batting average goes down as the third-highest total in state history. She will join the Lions program this fall along with eight other members of the softball recruiting class.

Additionally, Burkhalter was named the 2012 Catawba Valley Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the NCHSAA District 7 2A Player of the Year. She earned NCHSAA All-State 2A honors while additionally being named all-conference and all-district.
