
Men's Soccer Beats Newberry, 4-0

MARS HILL, N.C. – The no. 19 Lions’ men’s soccer team beat SAC foe Newberry College 4-0 on Senior Night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill took their record to 11-2 overall, 6-1 in the SAC. The Wolves fell to 3-8-1 on the year and 0-6-1 in the league.
Before the contest, Stephen Bivens, Craig Carwood, Phillip Dabney, Andres Diaz, Shadi Harb, Juan Kromschroder, Cody Langley, Regis Mawire, Logan McGiboney and Zac Scott were recognized as the Lions 10 senior players on the 2012 squad.
Stephen Bivens scored the Lions’ first goal at the 15:17 mark on a redirected free kick. Shadi Harb and Andres Diaz assisted the score.
Shadi Harb gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage in the 27th minute off a free kick about 30 yards out. Alex Mullen then extended Mars Hill’s advantage a couple minutes later (27:53) when he scored on a series of touch passes from Bivens and Diaz. That score would hold until halftime.
Felipe Ferraro added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute on a breakaway. The long scoring pass was delivered by Harb. That was the last score of the match to make the final tally 4-0 in favor of the home team.
Mars Hill outshot the Wolves, 21-11. Newberry enjoyed four more corner kicks (6-2) than the Lions. Zac Scott played the entire match in goal for MHC and made seven saves. Patrick Sweatt also played 90 minutes in the net for Newberry and made three saves.
Mars Hill will host UNC Pembroke on October 16. The match is slated to start at 5 p.m.
