CHARLESTON, W. Va.-- The Mars Hill volleyball team dropped their first match to Cedarville in the UC Invitational, but rallied to defeat Virginia Union in their second match of the day Friday afternoon.
After taking the first set 25-20, Cedarville came back to down Mars Hill in the next three sets to take home the victory. Mars Hill swept Virginia Union 25-15, 25-24 and 25-11. Mars Hill is now 4-3 overall on the season. Cedarville remained undefeated at 7-0, while Virginia Union fell to 0-6.
Marissa Wixson paced Mars Hill with eight kills in the Cedarville match, while Hillary Gambrell and Regan Macomson added six kills apiece. Macomson added three blocks. Cedarville was paced by Hannah Wagner with 18 kills. Heather Kirkpatrick (15), Kara Yutzy (15) and Lori Inkrott (10) all reached double-digits in digs for Cedarville as part of their defensive effort.
Toni Cole paced the Lions with 12 kills in the Virginia Union match. Cole was in on four blocks (one solo) and added three digs in the match. MHC blocked nine Virginia Union attacks and held the Panthers to a .032 hitting percentage. Maggie Murphy led Mars Hill with 14 digs, while Wixson chipped in with 11.
The Lions continue play at the UC Invitational tomorrow. Mars Hill will take on host Charleston (W. Va.) at 11 a.m. before wrapping up play with a match against Chowan at 1 p.m.
