MARS HILL, N.C. – In a battle of two nationally ranked soccer teams, no. 17 Mars Hill defeated no. 10 Young Harris College, 3-1 Wednesday evening in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 8-1 on the season while YHC fell to 7-2 on the year.
Felipe Ferraro scored on an unassisted breakaway at the 12:01 mark to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage they would not relinquish. Three minutes later (15:08) Shadi Harb scored from around 25 yards out on a pass from Alex Mullen. MHC would carry the 2-0 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Harb scored his second goal of the contest at the 52:08 mark to give the Lions a 3-0 edge. The goal was assisted by Ferraro. Young Harris got on the board in the 68th minute when Niall McCabe found the back of the net on a through ball from Lewis Hilton to trim the deficit to 3-1.
Mars Hill outshot Young Harris, 22-18. Corner kicks were tied at four apiece while MHC was called offsides seven times as opposed to Young Harris who recorded four offside calls. Zac Scott played the entire match in goal for Mars Hill and made four saves. Wezly Barnard also played the entire match in the net for YHC and made eight saves.
Mars Hill will host SAC rival Catawba College on September 28. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
