MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions’ men’s soccer team ranked 13th in the nation and first in the Southeast Region, defeated Montreat College, 2-1 Wednesday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill improved to 13-2-1 on the season while the Cavaliers fell to 3-10-1 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Montreat found the net on a long rebound two minutes into the second frame. Alexandru Popa scored the goal assisted by Pedro Naves.
Tom Allison tied the match at the 53:17 mark, also off a rebound. The ball was sent in by Alex Mullen.
Steven Bivens scored the match winner in the 75th minute. It was Bivens’ ninth goal of the season. He is second in the SAC in goals scored.
Mars Hill outshot the Cavaliers, 30-6. The Lions had five corner kicks as opposed to Montreat who had one. Zac Scott played the entire contest in goal for Mars Hill and made one save. Lucas Carvalho also played 90 minutes in the net for the Cavaliers and made 10 saves.
Mars Hill will play at SAC rival Carson-Newman College on Saturday, October 27. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
