- To make our athletes more well rounded and help them be more prepared for the “real world” when they leave Mars Hill College
- Increase attendance at already established programs on campus (i.e. - Health fair, black history month events etc). Assist in recruiting! This is a great sell to the parents that we care about their children’s future not just what they can do for us on the playing field/court.
- Each student-athlete will be required to attend eight events that fit under the Lifeskills umbrella. Below is a list of events that will occur on campus this year that will count. Any educational opportunity will fit into the requirements. If athletes are not sure if the event will count, check with Jennifer Williams. There will be a list of events on the website that are acceptable. Check the list often for updates. Student-athletes must use the form on the website and get it signed and turned into their coaches.
- One of their eight events MUST but a community service event, however you can only use community service for 1 of the 8 required events. Team community service events do fulfill this requirement. Individually, athletes can set up their service through the Lifeworks office by contacting Kasey Boston.
- Every program needs to assign one coach to keep up with the Lifeskills requirements. Once every athlete has fulfilled their requirements this information must be turned into Pam. They MUST get a signature when they attend events!
- The Mars Hill Athletic Administration sees this program as a part of each coach’s job responsibilities. It is helpful if the student-athletes see our coaches supporting other events on campus outside of athletics.
What is Lifeskills?:
The Life Skills Program is a program based on six categories:
- Commitment to Academic Excellence to support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.
- Commitment to Athletic Excellence to build philosophical foundations for development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to well-being of the student athlete.
- Commitment to Personal Development to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, leadership, personal growth and decision making-skills.
- Commitment to Career Development to encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.
- Commitment to Service to engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities.
- Commitment to Diversity to expand the ideas and ideas of our student athletes to make them more empathetic and understanding of our world today!
